Hama Beads Design Ideas
Are there any Hama Beads fans out there willing to share some tips?
My daughter got some Hama Beads for her birthday, they are ace! I have some questions though:
What setting do you iron them on? Is a 2-spot setting hot enough, or too hot?
What can you use instead of the special paper? Does it have to have a shiny side?
Is it possible to join pieces together? If so, do you have any tips?
Do you have any tips on sorting the colours? (other than yogurt pots and a cocktail stick). And is there an easy way of getting the beads on the board or putting them in fiddly areas?
Personal preference question: do you iron both sides, or just the one?
Any other tips gratefully received!
I use the Perler brand beads. Same thing just depends on where you live.
Anyway parchment paper should work as ironing paper. I use the linen/cotton setting on my iron and iron for a count of 10-15 depending on the size of the design and the color. I find the darker colors don't melt as well. I iron both sides. If I want to take a picture I only iron one side then snap the pic and iron the other side.
For my 5 year old she picks a design and then I put a single layer of beads out on an old cookie sheet (an old serving tray or plastic lid with low edges works good too). Her fingers are small enough but when my Hubby gets involved he uses a simple pair of tweezers.
As for sorting the colors I don't bother. My children are notorious color mixers (I have a 2lb ball of purpley/brown playdoh 
. I just bought a 10 L plastic bin and dumped all the beads into it. It also helps to store the pegboards in as well. Then they get spread out on the cookie sheet to go color hunting. It helps learn colors too. Or ziploc baggies would work well too.
As for joining pieces the website I have below has several tips. I find that lacing/thread or a glue gun works the best. Plus they have designs that you can create that then snap together like a puzzle. (check out the dice under their 3-d projects. I've made several pairs. The dog seems to think they are her treats tho.)
